In today’s English language fun fact, we thought we would tell you why a Club Sandwich is called a club sandwich!
Here at Do-English we think learning English is much more than verbs and sentence construction, we think that learning about English culture, old and new will help you better understand your English and make learning English more fun.
All over the English speaking world people love to eat Club Sandwiches.
A traditional club sandwich is toasted bread with chicken, lettuce, bacon and mayonnaise. The sandwich is cut into quarters and each quarter is held together with cocktail sticks.
A club sandwich has two layers which are separated by an extra slice of toast.
The first club sandwich was made in the Union Club of the City of New York sometime in 1819.
But why is it called a club sandwich?
Because of the way the ingredients are stacked between the bread slices, starting at the bottom a club sandwich is made like this:
- Bread (toasted)
- Bread (toasted).
When you club at the letters of the way the ingredients are stacked you can see they are C, L and B.
Of course CLB don’t make an English word but if you but a U between the L and B you get the word club.
But the letter “u” is not there just to make the word club, it is there to remind the person making the sandwich the correct order to stack the ingredients:
That is why a club sandwich is called a club sandwich.
